The Beer Plan - Amsterdam

In anticipation of the Belgian leg of our journey, I have spent the last few weeks putting together a plan for the ten days we have there. Breweries and specialty beer bars feature heavily on my list of things to do and see. I'll write about our planned itinerary for Belgium soon, today I thought I'd write about what I'd like to try and see beer-wise in and around Amsterdam.

First of all, this afternoon we're going to catch the free guided tour of Brouwerij t' IJ, a small brewery based in a converted mill here in Amsterdam. They make mostly Belgian inspired beers, also a pilsner and 'Columbus', what looks to be a US inspired imperial amber ale. I tried their wit last night at a small bar near where we are staying, and it was delicious!

There are also a couple of bars and bottle shops I'd like to check out while we're here: Cafe Gollem and Cracked Kettle.

An hour's train raid south of Amsterdam in the town of Bodegraven is Brouwerij de Molen. I've had some of their beers at home and found them pretty good, but I'm really looking forward to trying some from the source. We're going to head out there on Tuesday for lunch or dinner.
