The fun and games in beautiful Berlin continues - drinking cocktails 200+ metres up the Fehnsehturm (television tower), discovering the amazing, ever-changing street art at the East Side Gallery, and yesterday... open air karaoke at Mauerpark.
I originally wanted to visit Mauerpark on a Sunday because I'd heard great things about the market - and they were true - lots of vintage and second hand treasures, handmade pieces and general bric-a-brac. The market has a relaxed, bohemian feel, and as the afternoon goes on bongo drummers, bubble-blowers and other street performers start to emerge. But the real drawcard is the open air karaoke, which starts around 3pm.
Yesterday, over 1000 people gathered in the Mauerpark ampitheatre to watch as locals and tourists alike belted out tunes from Roadhouse Blues to Stray Cat Strut. I got the impression that this was a fairly usual turnout for a summer Sunday afternoon. Edward from NY (above), a young artist here on on a student grant, did a fantastic rendition of Emotional Rescue.
To the left, the television tower is a good central landmark for figuring out where you are in the city.
This older fella with a big grey beard seemed to be a regular, as the crowd went wild when he took the stage and sang, very confidently, My Way in German.
Bearpit Karaoke is organised and hosted by one Irish lad who seems to bring the speakers and equipment on the back of his bike. Check out more about Bearpit Karaoke at http://bearpitkaraoke.com/
